Rothschild Capital
The Rothschild family is a famous European Jewish banking dynasty. The family was founded by Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812) in the 18th century. He established his banking business in the German city of Frankfurt am Main and became one of the most influential financiers in Europe.
At their peak in the 19th century, Noah and James Mayer Rothschild sold government bonds to finance foreign wars, created powerful international cartels, provided loans to governments and amassed a fortune estimated at $350 billion (in today’s money). Their accomplishments were all the more remarkable considering that they were blocks away from Hitler’s Nuremberg rally site where Jews were persecuted and later sent to concentration camps during World War II.
The five sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild moved to other leading European financial centers — London, Paris, Berlin and Vienna — to expand their banking empire. In London, Nathan Mayer Rothschild became one of Britain’s most important investors and tipped off British buyers about Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo before it had been announced. Baron Alphonse de Rothschild heired his father’s business interests in Paris and formed an important investment concern that still exists today. Albert Salomon von Rothschild led a prominent banking and industrial house in Vienna until 1938 when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany.
Today, various branches of the family control banks and companies throughout Europe; however, much of their fortune remains hidden from view as many descendants have systematically stayed out of public life for fear of anti-Semitic attacks or legal action for unpaid debts owed by defunct governments like Germany following WWI. Nonetheless, philanthropy remains an integral part of their legacy with ongoing donations towards education programs around the world as well as humanitarian causes such as feeding the poor.
